Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance Retraining
Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance Retraining is a research-based, proven-effective method of improving or even eliminating many sources of dizziness and imbalance. It has undergone tremendous research and development in recent years, and we have an ongoing commitment to integrate research into our practices.
Angela Vallejo is a trained Physiotherapist ready to assist you in providing prompt assessment and effective treatment of vertigo, dizziness, unsteadiness, and motion sensitivity.
Our goal on assessment is to identify indicators of a vestibular problem and screen for possible central, cardiovascular, or cervicogenic factors.
We provide a thorough and comprehensive Vestibular assessment, which includes:
- Tests for nystagmus
- Tests for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) to establish which ear canal is involved
- Gross vertebral artery, cranial nerve, and cerebellar scans to identify “red flags”
- Static and Dynamic Balance performance
- Vestibulo-ocular reflex tests
- Cervical spine mobility and stability testing, cervico-cephalic kinaesthesia evaluation, TMJ scan, and lower extremity assessment when indicated
There are numerous treatment options for appropriate patients, including:
- Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvers to eliminate BPPV (such as the Epley manoeuvre) – usually only one or two manoeuvres are required
- Supervised and home-based Vestibular Rehabilitation exercises used to maximize CNS compensation for vestibular pathology. These serve to improve balance, reduce motion sensitivity, and increase VOR – gain when indicated.
- Balance retraining and fall prevention programs
- Instruction on alternate strategies if there is a large bilateral or central vestibular loss
- Cervico-cephalic kinaesthesia training and orthopaedic manual Physiotherapy if there is a cervicogenic component present
We hope to have the opportunity to work with you in helping with dizziness and balance disorders.
