Visceral Manipulation
Viscera is a term that refers to the internal organs of the body, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Visceral Manipulation is a gentle manual therapy that is used to address restrictions in mobility that may be present as a result of scar tissue from previous surgeries or trauma.
“When you breathe, walk and stretch, your organs move in your chest and abdomen. For example, when you take a breath, your kidneys move one inch; and with deep inhalation, they move 4 inches. This movement of actions is transmitted through fascia to other structures of the body. When you are healthy, all the structures move with fluidity. Optimum health relies on this harmonious relationship.” *The Barral Institute
“Organs can lose mobility due to physical trauma, surgery, infection, pregnancy etc.. When a tissue becomes adhered to another, there is a change in the normal biomechanical movement pattern and this can lead to tension and irritation in other areas.
It is thought that Visceral Manipulation may be the “missing link” in recurring or chronic musculoskeletal pain. So if you have a chronic pain that has not responded to conventional Physiotherapy or Chiropractic treatment, it may be worthwhile considering an assessment with a therapist trained in this emerging field of practice.
